Farmers First -- How We Work
As this site develops, details about the step-by-step process for how Farmers First works and how people join in will be included. In the meantime, the following are basic premises and elements to the program.
Principal Objective: Farmers First wants to establish a free and transparent system of commercial pricing that directly benefits farmers and is recognized by international coffee and tea purchasing companies.
Strategic Objectives: Along with our principal objective, Farmers First seeks to develop a system through which the public (informed consumers) recognizes those companies adhering to commercial and economic pricing advantages for farmers. Ideally, companies seeking to benefit farmers and reward their customers with exceptional products should receive improved market positions.
Key Elements: In order to contribute to reaffirming commercial and economic ties between the producers and buyers of quality coffee and tea, the following entities need to be involved in an equal and transparent manner:
- Farmers First, who would represent the interests of farmers from participating countries, while monitoring the transparency and integrity of the entire process.
- The Producers (Farmers), who would produce quality coffee and tea, freely negotiate with purchasing companies, and receive direct benefit for their efforts.
- The Purchasers (Roasters and Importers), who would buy quality products equal to or better than the fair trade price.
- The Auditing Entity, who would receive affidavits and contracts and maintain necessary confidentiality, while verifying compliance with established criteria on an ongoing basis.
- The Public Relations Office, who would assist with publication of declarations, distribute the Farmers First Handbook and materials, and aid with program logistics.
